Digital X-Rays are a Clearer, Safer Way to Catch Problems Early
A quick X-ray can save a lot of hassle.
Having X-rays taken is such a normal part of a dental checkup that most people don’t think much about them. Modern X-rays have actually advanced quite a bit, and now they’re faster, clearer, and use much less radiation than traditional X-rays. We use digital X-rays at Berrien Dental because they help us protect your oral health while giving us more insight into what’s happening with your smile.
Let’s take a closer look at what makes this technology so beneficial for you and your dentist.
What makes digital X-Rays different?
Traditional X-rays used film, which means the images had to be developed just like a film camera. The developing process takes time, and if the developed image ended up blurry, or not quite in the right spot, it meant new X-rays had to be retaken.
Digital X-rays use electronic sensors to capture the image, like a digital camera. We snap the digital image, and it shows up on your dentist’s screen almost instantly. If we don’t get the first X-ray right? No worries, because all it takes is a quick readjustment and another scan right away.
Digital X-rays are also more detailed and easier to adjust on your dentist’s end. They can enlarge and brighten the images to detect small trouble spots, such as a tiny dot of tooth decay or an inflamed tooth root.
Why does early detection matter?
The majority of dental problems start very quietly. Tooth decay is a great example of this. A small cavity can form between teeth or under an old filling, and most people don’t feel any pain or discomfort at first. Pain usually shows up after the decay has expanded and permanent damage is happening to your tooth’s enamel, often resulting in what seems to be a sudden toothache or jolt of sensitivity when drinking something cold, hot, or sweet.
Digital X-rays help us catch cavities, bone loss, and early infections before you have symptoms. That timing is important because treatment is always going to be less invasive, expensive, and time-consuming when a problem is fixed as early as possible. Using tooth decay as an example again, a very small cavity can be quickly treated with a simple filling. The longer decay is left untreated, the bigger the cavity will grow, and the higher the chances you may need a dental crown or even root canal therapy.
X-rays are safe and comfortable for patients.
Some patients are concerned about radiation. We’re happy to tell you that modern digital X-rays use extremely low doses of radiation. A full-mouth digital X-ray exposes you to about 0.001 mSv, which is roughly 85% less radiation than traditional film. To put this into perspective, a short airplane flight exposes you to more radiation than a typical digital X-ray.
Knowing this can be especially reassuring if you need X-rays regularly to keep an eye on tooth decay or you’re actively managing gum disease.
How does Berrien Dental use digital imaging?
Digital X-rays are a normal part of routine exams because they let your dentist see what’s going on in the places they can’t see visually. Our digital X-rays help us check for cavities between teeth, look under old fillings or crowns, and spot early signs of infection before they turn into bigger problems. They also help us track bone health and the support around your teeth, which is important for keeping your smile stable and catching any early signs of periodontal disease.
We also use digital X-rays when we’re planning restorative and cosmetic treatment. If you need a crown, an implant, or clear aligners, it’s easier to plan everything with the most detailed images possible. Better images lead to more precise care, which not only makes our job easier but also guarnatees you have a smooth experience as a patient.
See more, treat sooner, stay healthier.
Good dental care should feel simple. Preventive visits give you a clear look at what’s going on, enable you to handle small issues early, and help you avoid the bigger problems that tend to show up when something gets missed. Digital X-rays support that by making it easier to spot concerns sooner, often before you feel a thing.
If it’s been a while since your last checkup, or if you’re looking for a dentist in Berrien Springs who uses digital X-rays as part of a modern preventive approach, we would love to help.
